Little Cayman Getaway

 

Here's a quick little Geography lesson for you all...

The Cayman Islands consists of three sister islands:

Grand Cayman - where we live. 

Population: 55 000

Area: 196 Sq. km

Cayman Brac 

Population: 2000

Area: 38 Sq. km

Little Cayman 

Population: 150

Area: about 25 Sq. km

JP and I went to Cayman Brac in May 2009 with six friends and had a great long weekend with them. Unfortunately the weather didn't co-operate the whole time we were there as there was a mini tropical storm that passed over, so we played a lot of boardgames... but when the sun came out JP and the rest of the gang had some awesome dive experiences and I enjoyed my book while lying in the hammock on the beach and we all enjoyed exploring the island together.

Fire Station / Airport / Post Office

This year we decided to go away for four nights to Little Cayman for our final getaway before our little girl arrives. Flying into Little Cayman was quite an experience, it was about a 20 minutes flight. The small 12 seater plane only just fit the width of the "runway" and the airport at the end of the runway was a one roomed wooden "building"

which had the Fire Station on the left side of the building  housed with the island's one and only fire engine and the post office on the right side of the building with a few P.O. Boxes! The door in the middle  is the actual airport office, one tiny office with a friendly faced staff member, a comfy plastic lawn chair and a machine to print tickets! The scale for weighing your bags is outside to the right of the door!

Two of our good friends, Jeremy and Sheena, joined us for the first two days (they were also part of the gang at Cayman Brac last year) and we had such a great time... no tv / internet / cell phones, just lying about in hammocks reading and relaxing, enjoying the slow pace of the island and letting the rust settle in our bones.

JP joined Jeremy and Sheena for some salt water fly-fishing for Bonefish while I relaxed and read in the shade of our own private gazebo and enjoyed the quiet. JP ended up catching a Bonefish and a Barracuda! (photos to follow....still need to get them from Jeremy).

JP and I explored the small island on cool old school back-pedal-brake bicycles, JP did a couple of awesome dives, we ate delicious buffet meals three times a day at our resort (as residents of Grand Cayman we got a resident's special for the accom / food), we took a kayak and paddled the 180 meters across to Owen Island just off the  shore of our resort and enjoyed the deserted beaches and read and relaxed the rest of the time.

Little Cayman is famous for its scuba diving. One of the most famous dive site areas is Bloody Bay and it is consistently ranked as one of the world's top wall dives, that's where JP did all his dives! 

One thing that I really don't like hearing from JP when he returns from his dives is that he saw sharks..... needless to say, he saw four reef sharks on his dives at Bloody Bay! YIKES!

We felt totally relaxed, refreshed and chilled out during our stay and by the time we left on our last day I had read two books and had started my 3rd! We would most DEFINITELY recommend you visit Little Cayman. I know that we are looking forward to going back again as a family of three!
